SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Fiber-optic Seismology in Theory and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Please register for Fiber-optic Seismology in Theory and Pra
 ctice on January 29\, 2020 2:00 PM EST at:\n\nhttps://attendee.
 gotowebinar.com/register/181492390555777549\n\nPresented by: N
ate Lindsey\, Stanford University\n\nAbstract: Distributed Aco
ustic Sensing (DAS) is an emerging fiber-optic sensing metho
d that turns an optical fiber into a massive\, meterscale\, mu
lti-kilometer seismic array. In this webinar\, I will begin b
y providing an overview of the physics of fiber-optic sensin
g\, and how we use optoelectronic instruments connected to op
tical fibers\, often embedded in the telecommunications netwo
rk\, to make DAS measurements in the laboratory and field. Th
en\, I will discuss an on-going community calibration effort
to quantify DAS instrument response. Lastly\, I will show res
ults from recent earthquake and ambient noise studies on the
seafloor\, in the cryosphere\, and beneath city streets -- wi
th the aim to highlight how\, why and where DAS can make a di
fference when solving a particular earth science question.\n\n
After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email con
taining information about joining the webinar. PLEASE NOTE:
Registration does not confirm or guarantee you will have a
spot during the webinar\, as we are limited to 500 participa
nts. Please hop on the webinar early for your best chances t
o see the webinar live. Remember that all IRIS webinars are
archived for later viewing at https://www.youtube.com/pl
