SUMMARY:Long Range Science Plan for Seismology (LRSPS)
DESCRIPTION:The National Science Foundation has directed the IRIS consor
tium to assist the seismological research community in prepa
ring a Long Range Science Plan for Seismology (LRSPS) by the
end of this year.\n\nThe fundamental LRSPS process will be to
explore and document the most exciting directions for seism
ology on a decadal time frame with the community.  The prin
cipal product will be a concise and exciting report (with on
-line supporting materials) to appeal to a broad range of NS
F\, Congressional\, and wider interests and funding sources.
With large-scale leadership changes inevitable in Washingto
n DC this year\, we expect this report to be especially valua
ble for making the case for seismological research at a pivo
tal time.\n\nThe IRIS Board has selected Rick Aster\, Don Forsy
th\, and Barbara Romanowicz to co-chair this effort\, and Thor
ne Lay to serve as the Science Plan editor. As part of this
process\, we are organizing a 2-day NSF-funded workshop to ga
ther community input to steer the LRSPS process. The results
of the workshop will be used by an LRSPS writing group to a
rticulate a series of key scientific questions and recommend
ations for future research directions that will be widely di
stributed through printed documents and web-publication that
will be suitable for use by broad and diverse constituencie
s ranging from the research community to government agencies
.\n\nThe workshop will be limited to 120 participants. The dea
dline for full consideration is August 4\, and successful app
licants will be notified by August 11.  Accepted applicants
will be provided with full on-site support for lodging and
meals but will be expected to cover their own transportation
  costs.\n\nView the LRSPS website: http://web-archive-2022.iri
