SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Instrumentation for Observational Seismology - Wher

DESCRIPTION:Please register for Instrumentation for Observational Seismo
logy - Where our squiggles come from on April 8\, 2020 2:00 P

 743385061645\n\nPresented by: Dr. Adam Ringler\, U.S. Geologica
l Survey Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory\n\nAbstract: Sei
smic instrumentation has advanced profoundly in the past 50
years from when seismologists directly made measurements on
paper records of waveforms. Now\, a single broadband seismome
ter the size of a bowling ball can record a larger range of
ground motions than the six sensors\, each the size of a Germ
an Shepherd\, used in the World Wide Standardized Seismograph
ic Network in the 1970s. High dynamic range digitizers combi
ned with the timing and telemetry capabilities of satellites
have enabled seismic data from across the Earth to arrive a
t your desktop in almost real-time. Additionally\, several so
ftware packages have been developed that allow seismologists
to quickly process massive seismological data sets that wou
ld not have been feasible in the days of paper records. Ulti
mately\, these technologies have enabled rapid characterizati
on of earthquakes and improved our knowledge of earth struct
ure and surface processes.  However\, when using these techn
ologies\, we can begin to lose touch with how our data is pro
duced and how subtle nuances in data collection and processi
ng algorithms may be impacting our results.  In this webina
r I will discuss how modern seismic data gets recorded\, some
of the current limitations in broadband seismology\, as well
as a few “gotchas” that can arise.\n\nAfter registering\,
you will receive a confirmation email containing information
about joining the webinar. PLEASE NOTE: Registration does
not confirm or guarantee you will have a spot during the w
ebinar\, as we are limited to 500 participants. Please hop on
the webinar early for your best chances to see the webin
ar live. Remember that all IRIS webinars are archived fo
