SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Distributed Acoustic Sensing in the Cryosphere
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the webinar: Distributed Acoustic Sensi
ng in the Cryosphere on Thursday\, February 25 at 12:00 PM
 Eastern.\n\nRegister here for this virtual event.\n\nPresented b
y: Dr. Fabian Walter\, ETH Zurich\n\nAbstract: Distributed aco
ustic sensing (DAS) dramatically increases seismic sensor co
verage\, turning kilometer-long fiber optic cables into thous
ands of seismic sensors. DAS and similar approaches image se
ismic sources in densely populated cities as well as deep oc
ean basins\, far away from the nearest conventional seismic s
tation. Like in many other disciplines\, there is hope that D
AS will fill critical monitoring gaps on glaciers\, ice sheet
s and avalanche-prone terrain. This talk will present DAS me
asurements in the cryosphere\, from technical aspects of cabl
e deployment to signal quality and source studies. Given the
se first experiences\, some conclusions of the potential and
limitations of this technique may already be drawn.\n\nThis is
a joint Distributed Acoustic Sensing Research Coordination
Network (DAS RCN) and Incorporated Research Institutions for
Seismology (IRIS) Webinar. You can find out more informatio
n and sign up for the DAS RCN mailing list. \n\nIf you are ne
w to Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)\, please watch this p
rimer video by Eileen Martin (Virginia Tech) and Nate Lindse
y (FiberSense) before the webinar.  \n\nAll IRIS webinarsÂ
are archived for later viewing on the IRIS YouTube channel
(Webinars playlist).\n\nAny questions? Contact us at webinar@
 iris.edu or das-rcn@iris.edu.
