SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Quantifying Geomorphic Change Using Drone-based Lid
 ar
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the webinar: Quantifying Geomorphic Cha
nge Using Drone-based Lidar on Thursday\, October 27 at 2:0
0 PM Eastern.\n\nRegister here for this virtual event. Afte
r registering\, you will receive a confirmation email contain
ing information about joining the webinar.\n\nPresented By/Au
thor: Harrison Martin\, Indiana University\n\nAbstract: Lidar
data have revolutionized the geosciences by allowing high-
resolution (< 1-5 m)\, repeat data that can resolve both vege
tation and bare-earth elevations. These lidar data are usual
ly collected by plane-based (airborne\; tens of km2 with ~10
 points/m2) or ground-based (terrestrial\; tens of m2 with tho
usands of points/m2) instruments. Here\, we overview the use
 of a third\, intermediate technique: drone-based lidar (~km2\,
with ~100 points/m2). We will explain and illustrate this n
ovel method and how it differs from existing methods for mea
suring topography. We will illustrate the power that drone-b
ased lidar offers geoscientists through case examples from o
ur own research into landscape dynamics: When a tree falls i
 n a forest\, can a drone detect it? How does a catastrophic d
am failure impact downstream river morphology? What can we l
earn about river mechanics with a high spatial-temporal data
set of an actively migrating river meander? We will summariz
e the ways that we have benefitted from this rapid-response\,
low-cost\, and high-resolution imaging technique as applied
to our research on hillslopes\, natural disasters\, and river
geomorphology.\n\nAll IRIS webinars are archived for later
viewing on the IRIS YouTube channel (Webinars playlist).\n\nA
ny questions? Contact us at webinar@iris.edu.
