SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Reflections of a Peripatetic Seismologist: Making B
 roader Impact Deeper
DESCRIPTION:Please register for Reflections of a Peripatetic Seismologi
st: Making Broader Impact Deeper on March 14\, 2018 2:00 PM
  EDT at: \n\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/44397
 29386125586945\n\nPresenter: Dr. Susan Hough\, United States G
eological Survey - Pasadena\, CA \n\nAbstract: As the IRIS co
mmunity appreciates as much as anyone\, seismology and relate
d disciplines are\, by their nature\, global in scope. In addi
tion to investigations focused on regional tectonics and/or
global Earth structure\, there remains an urgent impetus to b
etter characterize seismic hazard in many parts of the world
where risk is high and often growing. Additionally\, in many
parts of the world\, communities of local earthquake profess
ionals are eager for training and partnerships with the inte
rnational community. Commonly\, as part of the so-called broa
der impact\, an international research project includes capac
ity development activities\, which often take the form of a s
 hort-term training seminar for international partners\, and/o
r involvement by local partners in field investigations. In
this webinar\, I discuss projects I have led in recent years
in Haiti\, Nepal\, and Myanmar\, with support from the United S
tates Agency for International Development (USAID)\, includin
g the scientific objectives and the lessons learned for capa
city development.\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a con
firmation email containing information about joining the web
inar. PLEASE NOTE: Registration does not confirm or guarant
ee you will have a spot during the webinar\, as we are limit
ed to 500 participants. Please hop on the webinar early for
your best chance to see the webinar live. Remember that all
IRIS webinars are archived for later viewing at https://
