SUMMARY:Webinar - Results from the Salton Seismic Imaging Project (S
 SIP)
DESCRIPTION:Please register for Results from the Salton Seismic Imaging
Project (SSIP) on March 15\, 2017 2:00 PM EDT at: \n\nhttps:/
 /attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/7166409363286169347\n\nSpea
ker: Dr. Liang Han\, UTIG\, Austin\, TX \n\nAbstract: The Salton
Seismic Imaging Project (SSIP) acquired controlled-source s
eismic refraction and wide-angle reflection data in the Sal
ton Trough\, Southern California and northern Mexico\, in 2011
\, which provide constraints on the crustal and upper mantle
structure. Almost 2800 land seismometers and 50 OBS’s we
re deployed at almost 4300 sites\, in spacing as dense as 100
m\, which received seismic signals from 126 explosive shots
up to 1400 kg and over 2300 airgun shots. The actively exte
nding crust in the central Salton Trough is only 17-18 km t
hick\, with a strongly layered but relatively one-dimensional
structure for ~100 km in the direction of plate motion. Th
is thin transitional crust is mostly new\, created by metamo
rphism of young sediment from the Colorado River and underpl
ating magmatism from hot upper mantle. Both seismicity dist
ribution and thermal modeling suggest narrow brittle deforma
tion in the upper crust and distributed ductile deformation
in the lower crust. The creation of new crust keeps the cr
ust thick and predominantly ductile\, which delays the contin
ental breakup and the initiation of seafloor spreading. If
the Salton rift succeeds\, this new transitional crust will b
ecome part of the continental margin.\n\nAfter registering\, y
ou will receive a confirmation email containing information
about joining the webinar.  NOTE: Registration does not con
firm or guarantee you will have a spot during the webinar\, a
s we are limited to 100 participants. Webinars are archived
 for later viewing at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis
