When the Board of Directors met with Margaret Leinen in January 2006, she encouraged IRIS to participate in "Walter Hays' Conference". Walter Hays of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is the Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction, which is an organizer of the International Disaster Reduction Conference (IDRC). According to the conference web site,
"The IDRC Davos 2006 is a follow-up to the UN Kobe Conference in 2005 and is jointly organized by the Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction (GADR), Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR)."
