What Are Teachable Moments

COVID-19 Response: IRIS is committed to supporting educators in their need for “virtual” investigations and e-learning as a result of stay-at-home orders.  Over the next 10 weeks, IRIS will be releasing a weekly 'Teachable Moment' that offers an opportunity for teachers and students to explore various elements of seismology. These will be offered in addition to our regular earthquake summaries.

IRIS Teachable Moments presentations capture that unplanned opportunity to bring knowledge, insight, and critical thinking to the classroom following a newsworthy earthquake.

Each IRIS Teachable Moment:

• Is a 5-15 slide PowerPoint presentation that contains interpreted USGS regional tectonic maps and summaries, computer animations, seismograms, AP photos, and other event-specific information
• Generated within hours of the event!
• Prepared by seismologists and educators!
• A classroom-ready product that can be customized!
• Is pushed to you through notifications when new products are ready!
